THE JOURNEY
Tracing
the sources of William England’s 19th
Century photographs took Alan Alpenfelt on a two-month journey
through some of the most remarkable scenery on Earth. He experienced
first-hand the efforts William made to encapsulate the attraction of
the Swiss landscape and present it to would-be travellers.
At the same time as taking 3D photographs of exactly the same locations as those of William England, Alan recorded the sounds surrounding the modern-day traveller in the same environment. During his journey, he contemplated how different the modern-day experience is to that of William and his fellow travellers.
In each location, the environment was recorded in binaural sound and the corresponding 3D photos of what the location looks like today. These are now placed on Google Maps.
(Click on the below photos of present-day locations!)
In the exhibition, the recorded binaural sounds are linked to the stereographic photos in the Kaiser Panorama, recording the journey of the two artists working nearly two hundred years apart, presenting the significant differences in landscape and sound between their journeys and the two corresponding eras of tourism development.
